On Monday, Phil’s family announced that he had died away quietly at home on Sunday night, surrounded by his loved ones, including Marlo Thomas, his wife of 44 years. In their statement, they thanked everyone for their support and asked that donations be made to the Phil Donahue/Notre Dame Scholarship Fund or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in place of flowers.

We announce with heavy hearts that beloved television host Phil Donahue, who was eighty-eight, has passed away. In the talk show industry, Phil was a true innovator, and his contributions to television will always be valued.

In the industry, Phil Donahue was a trailblazer as well as a talk show host. He was the pioneer of TV talk show hosting, paving the way for the countless hosts who came after him. He became well-known and an essential figure in television history during the course of his show, “The Phil Donahue Show,” which ran for an astounding 29 years.

Phil was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, and started his professional life in radio in the 1950s before moving on to television. When he debuted “The Phil Donahue Show” in 1967, it featured live audience participation, a novel idea at the time. The program gained enormous popularity, and in 1974 it was renamed simply as “Donahue” after switching to a new station.

Phil Donahue produced over 6,000 episodes during his career, making a lasting impression on the talk show genre as well as daytime television. He received multiple honors for his talent and dedication, including 20 Emmy Awards. Of these Emmys, ten were for Outstanding Talk Show Host, demonstrating Phil’s talent for building strong bonds with his audience and stimulating dialogue. He won the coveted Peabody Award in 1980 and was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame in 1993.

President Joe Biden awarded Phil the Presidential Medal of Freedom earlier this year, recognizing his significant contribution to the television industry.

Phil Donahue inspired a generation of broadcasters and cleared the path for talk show hosts to come. His influence was felt well beyond the screen, as he paved the way for the professional careers of numerous aspiring hosts, among them Oprah Winfrey. As a matter of fact, Oprah herself honored Phil and acknowledged his crucial contribution to her success.

Oprah wrote on Instagram, “Without Phil Donahue being the first to prove that daytime talk and women watching should be taken seriously, there would not have been an Oprah Show.” He was a leader, and I’m appreciative of the chance to express my gratitude to him. Phil, I hope you find peace.

Although Phil Donahue will be greatly missed, his influence on the television industry and the innumerable lives he touched will live on as testament to his legacy. Let’s honor and remember this incredible trailblazer while also appreciating his contributions and the enduring legacy he leaves behind.
