Miley Cyrus, daughter of country star Billy Ray Cyrus, covered Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” in 2019, a song that she felt was written for her. The song was included as part of her set at Glastonbury in 2019 when Cyrus was about to get divorced and had recently lost her home in the California forest fires. She explained that the song was what drove her to that place, because she knew nothing else mattered.

Miley later covered the song again on the album The Blacklist, a tribute album released in 2021. In her version, Miley was accompanied on the piano by renowned singer and songwriter Elton John. Miley’s raspy and raw voice lends real emotion to the song, while John has undeniable musical talent.

The video above is from a live performance on The Howard Stern show in 2021, where Miley and Metallica were in Los Angeles while Howard Stern was in New York due to Covid. James Hetfield, Metallica frontman, took a backing role as Miley performed the lead, looking every bit as comfortable. He also talked about the origins of the song, saying that it was one of the most vulnerable songs.

Metallica fans are likely glad the band took the risk and wrote this beautiful song, as it is raw and emotional, showing a completely different side of the band. Miley captures the emotion perfectly, making this duet so unique. Watch the performance below.
