D’Corey Johnson: A Young Talent on America’s Got Talent

An 11-Year-Old’s Dream on the AGT Stage

D’Corey Johnson, a young singer from Louisville, Kentucky, made a remarkable appearance on the premiere episode of NBC’s America’s Got Talent Season 18 on May 30. With a captivating backstory and considerable experience for his age, D’Corey’s journey to the AGT stage began with a viral video.

A Challenge Accepted

D’Corey faced a unique challenge with his song choice for the show. While his favorite song was “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey, he was unfamiliar with “Open Arms” and had only five days to learn it. This task was made more impressive considering D’Corey’s involvement in another show simultaneously and his ability to perform acapella when requested by judge Simon Cowell.

Praise from the Judges

Reba McEntire, one of the judges, commended Simon’s decision to have D’Corey sing acapella, a move that showcased the young singer’s incredible talent.

A Viral Beginning

D’Corey’s musical journey started when he was a nine-year-old third grader. After requesting to sing the National Anthem at his school, Bates Elementary, his principal, Miss Dunn, recorded the performance and shared it on Facebook with permission from D’Corey’s mother. This marked the start of his rise to fame.
